South Africa’s Ramaphosa Heads to Court to Block Impeachment Process
The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has sought a court order at the High Court to prevent parliament from initiating impeachment proceedings against him. The political crisis emanates from allegations of stealing a whopping amount of $580,000 in cash from a sofa on his personal farm. Although an independent panel had earlier concluded that the president may have committed himself to breaking the law by keeping the money as regards the issue of foreign currency, Ramaphosa says the money he kept came from the sale of legal buffalos, which he claims was a case of misinterpretation of the panel's task. His move follows the Constitutional Court’s decision that Parliament's earlier decision to terminate the probe is illegal.
